Apple’s first foldable iPhone introduces an entirely new format for mobile work.
Apple has officially announced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone and the most significant change to the shape of the device in years.
Closed, the iPhone Duo operates through a compact 5.4 inch outer display. Open, it becomes a 7.6 inch workspace with the largest display ever built into an iPhone.
The two screens share the same proportions, allowing content to expand naturally as the device opens. Apple has also redesigned parts of iOS around the new format, with a vertical dock, side by side applications and the ability to save frequently used app combinations.
It is an iPhone designed to move between two states.
Built around the fold
The iPhone Duo uses a polished titanium frame and a custom hinge assembled from more than 100 precision components.
Its inner display features a nano texture finish developed to reduce glare and make the central crease less visible. When fully opened, the Duo measures just 5.2 mm thick, making it Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date.
Touch ID is integrated into the side button, replacing Face ID, while both displays support ProMotion, Always On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness.
Apple Pencil support is also coming to both displays later this year, using the USB C Apple Pencil.
A larger mobile workspace
The most interesting part of the iPhone Duo is not simply that it folds. It is what the additional space makes possible.
Two applications can run next to each other for the first time on an iPhone. A document can remain open beside an email. Notes can sit alongside a video call. Two Safari windows can be viewed at once, while saved app pairs make it easier to return to a familiar workflow.
The device can also remain partially folded, allowing it to stand independently for FaceTime, photography, video playback or use as a bedside display.
It is a form factor that sits somewhere between an iPhone and an iPad mini, while remaining small enough to carry in a pocket.
Pro performance, with a different focus
Inside, the iPhone Duo uses Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, supported by improved cooling and a dual battery architecture.
The camera system includes 48 megapixel Main and Ultra Wide cameras, a 12 megapixel outer camera and an under display FaceTime camera on the inside. The outer screen can also act as a preview when taking photographs with the rear cameras.
There are compromises compared with the iPhone 18 Pro. The Duo does not include Face ID, a dedicated Telephoto camera, LiDAR or the Action button. Its focus is clearly the display, flexibility and new ways of working rather than being Apple’s most complete camera system.
A new category of iPhone
The iPhone Duo will be available in Star White and Night Sky. Pricing starts at $1,999 for 256GB, with preorders opening on 16 October and availability beginning on 23 October.
More importantly, it introduces an entirely new category of Apple hardware.
For Bionic, the iPhone Duo presents an interesting design challenge. Its folding structure, multiple viewing angles and larger working surface change how an iPhone can live on a desk, charge and interact with the rest of a workspace.
We will be watching closely.
